As I’ve been venturing out to different districts and neighborhoods in San Francisco, I had yet to create a foodie list that would allow me to dive into the city’s food scene.
That is, until I had my very first SF Instagram brunch date with Amanda (@apointofvu). A California native, Amanda moved to San Francisco a few months ago and has made an effort to explore the beautiful hidden gems of the city.
As we were planning out the details for our meetup, she suggested we go to 20th Century Cafe located in Hayes Valley. Perfectly placed on a corner on Gough Street, this cafe was inspired by three Eastern European cities, creating the perfect blend of decor and sweet treats made by chef Michelle Polzine.
Everything on the menu looked heavenly but we ended up ordering an open faced cream cheese bagel with pickled shallots and dill and a slice from both the Hungarian and Russian Honey cake. The cakes were far from being dense or loaded with too much sugar. Light, fluffy, and the perfect level of sweetness, I highly recommend these two desserts to anyone looking to excite their palate.I’ll continue to visit the cafe until I’ve tried all of the sweets from the menu. Unlike other trendy cafes this one was calm, quiet, and provided the perfect lighting for reading and Instagrammers looking to get that perfect foodie pic. What sold me was the music that was playing, jazz and big band. How can you go wrong with that on a rainy day.
Thank you Amanda for introducing me to this gem. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the city with you.
